Canelake's in Virginia & Hibbing
In 1905, with the help of their oldest brother Christ, Gust & Tom Canelake founded the Virginia Candy Kitchen in the 100 block of Chestnut St. Christ & youngest brother Nick went on to found Hibbing Candy Kitchen in Hibbing MN. Tom Canelake later owned the Olympia Candy Kitchen in Virginia, while Gust operated the Virginia Candy Kitchen.
The photo shows their 2nd location at 417 Chestnut St Virginia MN. In 1920, the store was moved to its current location at 414 Chestnut St.
Gust's sons Leo & John Canelake were the 2nd generation to own the Virginia Candy Kitchen and after WWII, they renamed it Canelake's Candies. After they retired in 1982, Canelake's was sold to Jim Cina who faithfully followed all the family recipes for 36 years. On Oct. 1, 2018, Jim Cina retired and sold Canelake's Candies to the 3rd generation of Canelake's: Pamela Canelake Matson & Dennis Matson, Patricia Canelake, John Canelake & Chris Canelake.
